The only shrike with a very long tail. The white "V" on the back contrasts boldly wih the black body. In flight the white patches on the wings are conspicuous. Femails have white patches on the flanks. The immature is browner overall. Occurs in small groups and prefers open savanna where it perches on the top or on side branches of trees. Hunts by dropping into prey , which consists mostly of insects.
