Habitat requirements
Steenbok prefer a habitat that varies from open plains to undulating country with short to medium tall grassland and scattered shrubs and trees. Patches of tall grass, scattered wood bushes and even rocks are used as cover.

Food preference
Steenbok are browsers that select the most delicate components of the herbaceous layer, which ensures a high protein and soluble carbohydrate intake. Steenbok also utilise roots, bulbs wild fruit and pods. Tree species that are utilised include Acacia, Combretum, Boscia albitrunca, Grewia,Terminalia sericea, Ziziphus mucronata, Faurea saligna, Ximenia caffra

Steenbok are totally independent of water
